Privacy Policy — Last updated: March 27, 2026
The Valence is designed with privacy at its core. Most recovery data is stored locally on your device. When you use AI-powered features, selected data is sent for processing as described below. This policy describes what data we collect, how it is used, and your rights regarding that data.
The data controller responsible for your data is:
Furkan Dogan
Email: [email protected]
Most personal data — including journal entries, voice memos, mood logs, reason wall items, recovery progress, and app settings — is stored locally on your device using on-device persistence. We do not maintain user accounts or a server-side database of your recovery data.
The Valence uses Google's Gemini API to provide the following AI-powered features: AI Mentor, Journal AI Insight, Voice Analysis, Daily Protocol, and Command Center (Weekly Report).
When you use any of these features, the following categories of data may be sent to Google Gemini for processing:
AI requests are routed through Cloudflare Workers and processed by Google Gemini. Valence does not store AI inputs in its own app database.
When you send messages to the AI Mentor, your message text and recent conversation context are sent to Google's Gemini API. The AI generates a response based on your message and your current recovery context (such as your no-contact day count, stability score, and mood). Your name may be included in the request to personalize coaching.
When you request an AI analysis of a journal entry, the text content of that specific entry, along with previous entries for comparison, is sent to Google's Gemini API for emotional pattern analysis. The AI returns a structured analysis (emotional pattern, risk assessment, insight, and suggested action) which is then stored locally on your device alongside the entry.
When you record a voice memo and the AI analysis runs, the audio recording is sent to Google's Gemini API for transcription and emotional analysis. The resulting transcript, mood assessment, and risk score are stored locally on your device. A visible recording indicator is displayed at all times during voice recording.
When you use the Daily Protocol's AI features, recovery context (such as your mood, stability score, streak, check-in data, and recent activity statistics) is sent to Google's Gemini API for personalized coach guidance. Results are cached locally on your device.
When you generate an AI report in the Command Center, aggregated recovery data (such as mood patterns, check-in counts, urge levels, SOS usage, no-contact breach count, journal/voice/article counts, and active focus) is sent to Google's Gemini API. Results are cached locally on your device.
All AI processing is performed by Google's Gemini API. Google's handling of this data is governed by Google's API Terms of Service and their Privacy Policy.
A one-time AI Data Sharing consent screen is shown during the onboarding tour before the user reaches the main app. The screen discloses which AI features send data, what categories of data may be sent, and that data is routed through Cloudflare Workers and processed by Google Gemini. If the user declines or skips the tour, the same consent dialog reappears when opening any AI-enabled feature.
You must tap "Allow AI Processing" to use AI features. If you tap "Not Now," no data is sent and AI features remain disabled. Non-AI features (journaling, no-contact tracking, mood logging, articles) continue to work fully.
You can manage your AI data sharing preference at any time from the Settings screen within the app.
During onboarding, you complete a personalization quiz about your breakup situation (who initiated, reason, your reaction, contact status, and recovery goals). This data is stored locally on your device and is used to:
Quiz answers are never sent to any server independently. They are included as part of the AI coaching context only when you actively use AI features, under the same consent and data processing terms described above.
The Valence includes a voice recording feature for personal voice memos. In accordance with applicable requirements:
The Valence offers optional premium subscriptions managed through Apple's App Store and RevenueCat. When you subscribe:
New users receive a 3-day free trial with full access to all premium features. The trial starts automatically when you complete onboarding. After the trial period, free users receive 3 AI credits per week. No payment information is required for the free trial. Trial eligibility is also available through Apple's subscription system, which tracks eligibility per Apple ID.
